I'm trying to break into a hard-to-break-into culture right now. It's tough because I'm thin-skinned but I'll keep trying till I'm in and fluent. It's also a language with very little learning resources. Thank you, Luca, for the motivation boost as always!

Wow, that was a great explanation. I've always assumed if you knew a language, you were well versed in that particular language.

The best point you made is the language you are learning depends on how close it is to the language you know. I am a native English speaker with a proficiency in Spanish. I am able to speak Spanish pretty good, but my writing is at a 9th grade level so it isn't the greatest. But as an example, on your point. I find it really hard to learn Greek and it's been four weeks learning the language and I can barely speak it. But I just began learning German about three days ago and from the first day I've been speaking the basics of German very quickly. I am at a lost for trying to figure out Greek. Because I am horrible at learning this language. Why am I failing with Greek and doing so well with German? I am guessing I need to change my learning style in Greek?

  • @DevlogBill

Hi Luca, I am a native English speaker with a proficiency in Spanish. I never truly learned a language. I was born in an environment where we Spoke in the house English but when visiting family, walking around the neighborhood. The dominant language is Spanish. So, I gradually learned Spanish. So learning a third language feels like learning a language for the very first time. I don't have a method. Personal point of view started learning Greek about 4 weeks now and I barely achieved anything. But in contrast I just started learning German 3 days ago and I am already capable of forming complete sentences. Silly question? But do you find Greek to be a hard language to learn from your personal experience? I assumed it would be easier to learn because there are lots of Spanish and English vocabulary within the Greek language? Just curious thank you.

Many beginners want to directly speak with a complex syntax as they do in their native language and end up translating from it. This is exactly what I tell them, try to express yourself with how much language you have and that means making it easier

Some people do indeed speak a foreign language with a native like accent, but I assume they're not particularly common. Part of the problem with this concept is particular people who are more or less tone deaf regarding the particular sound characteristics of a foreign language, and they're essentially incapable of hearing what other people can easily distinguish. I had a speech impediment when I was a kid. Being with a speech therapist eventually made it easier for me to comprehend proper pronunciation in my foreign language of Spanish.

From my point of view a self-claimed polyglot always has to start showing his official B1 certificate. Surely, you can pass an exam and be very shy person and be not able to speak fluently, but it doesn't work vice versa: in case you have B1 (at least) certificate, it means you really can speak, read, write and listen the language :) Our "YT-polyglot" mostly don't show their cerficiates :)

Answer: As long as the accuracy is about 95% or higher, yes. (Watch my Yakko’s World Google Translate video to find out the accuracy. I use 100 words worth of difficult sample paragraphs to translate and then put it back to English and every word that is wrong gets 1 point off.)

Gracias
